CAREER
Mary Rowsell (SMC 7T2), now Mary Dalton, is currently Professor Emerita of English at the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Poet Laureate of the City of St. John’s.
Irene (Irena) R. Makaryk (SMC 7T4) is now Distinguished Professor at the University of Ottawa. Her most recent book is April in Paris: Theatricality, Modernism, and Cultural Politics at the 1925 Art Deco Expo (University of Toronto Press, 2018). Her new book project, under contract with UTP, is provisionally titled, Arts for Survival: Performative Strategies and the Search for the Lost Franklin.
Joann Rossitter (SMC 7T8) has recently published her novelette The Children of Auschwitz, after her tour of Poland several years ago. She is currently working on a second book, a historical romance novella with the working title of Europe in the 20th Century, A Tale of Two Families. Joann has been involved at the University of Toronto as a member of the Senior Alumni Executive and as a participant at the Festival of Dance and the Hart House Idol open mic. She and her husband John Minardi (SMC 7T1) have attended many alumni events at St. Mike’s and even played Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus at the St. Mike’s Santa Claus Parade party. Joanne looks forward to returning to her beloved alma mater when the pandemic subsides.
Anne Louise Mahoney (SMC 8T4) was honoured to serve as the editor of a new collection of essays on the role and contributions of lay people in the Church today, Looking to the Laity: Reflections on Where the Church Can Go from Here (Novalis, 2021). The book covers a range of topics, from liturgy to social justice and ecology to bioethics, and the role of women (and more). Amazingly, of the 11 contributors, it turned out that seven were graduates of St. Mike’s (at the undergraduate or graduate level): John B. Kostoff (SMC 7T7); Joe Gunn (SMC 8T0); Moira McQueen (USMC 8T9, USMC 9T6); Catherine E. Clifford (USMC 0T2); Simon Appolloni (USMC 0T4); Catherine Mulroney, (SMC 8T2, USMC 1T0); and Patricia Dal Ben (USMC 1T7). A wonderful collaborative effort!
Gale A. Yee, PhD (USMC 8T5) was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Virginia Theological Seminary (Alexandria, VA) in December 2020 in a virtual Dean’s Cross for Service ceremony.
Congratulations to Dr. Leona English (SMC 8T9), who received The Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education (CASAE) during the Adult Education in Global Times conference.
Congratulations to Dr. Colleen M. Hanycz (SMC 8T9), elected as the 35th president of Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is the first lay president and the first woman president in Xavier University’s 190-year history.
Tamara Jemuovic (SMC 1T4) is a three-time Miss Canada winner in various organizations across Canada and recently won the national title of Miss International Canada 2020–2021. She is currently working with a Toronto organization called Feed it Forward, with a mission to help end hunger by using food that would otherwise end up in landfills and repurposing it for those who are food insecure. MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
John Jacquemain (SMC 6T7) and his wife Nancy (née Post) marked their 50th wedding anniversary on September 11th, 2021, which they celebrated with their three sons and four grandchildren with a weekend of activities together.
G. Paula Owolabi (SMC 6T7) had a family picnic with Tony Fonverberi, who is in his third year studying Astrophysics. Paula describes Tony as her “adopted grandson” (they met at St. Joseph’s Parish in Highland Creek). Here they’re wearing their USMC colours at her family’s picnic at Adams Park, Scarborough, in September.
Darlene Madott (SMC 7T5) is the author of eight books, including Stations of the Heart and Making Olives and Other Family Secrets. A lawyer who practised for more than three decades in Toronto, her eighth book, Dying Times, was published in October 2021. It grows out of aspects of her legal background and is a fictional exploration of the last journey. You can visit the website: www.DyingTimes.com
This past summer, Angelo De Medicis (SMC 8T1), Vicky Esposito Brady (SMC 8T1), Angela Maria Albini (SMC 8T1), Nicolina Bregolin (SMC 8T1), Domenico Fazari (SMC 8T1), Jerry Rossi (SMC 8T1), and Rocky Racco (SMC 8T1) organized a stroll through campus they called a “Walk Down Memory Lane” to celebrate their 40th reunion, complete with a photo op in Brennan Hall.
Daniel Livera (SMC 1T2) and Anna (Lubinsky) Livera (SMC 1T4) are happy to announce the birth of baby Phoebe Anne, born August 24, 2021. This is the first grandchild of Andy Lubinsky (SMC 7T9).
Anisha Bhardwaj (SMC 1T5) and her fiancé, Peyman Pardis, attended St. Michael’s as undergrads. After graduating, she went to law school and now practises law in downtown Toronto. Peyman completed his MBA and is now a manager at Deloitte. Their engagement shoot took place at SMC two years ago. Some of their favourite things about St. Mike’s were pub nights and time spent in the Kelly Library. They live close to campus and feel nostalgic every time they walk by.
Michael Bazzocchi and Olivia Bazzocchi (née Rapier) (SMC 1T4) got married on August 14, 2021 in St. Basil’s Catholic Parish. Michael is a former Don and graduated from UofT engineering (EngSci 1T3 and UTIAS 1T8).
Maryrose Milton (née Doucette) (SMC 2T1) got married on August 28, 2021, to Ash Milton.
